"Die Young" brings quite a few new things to the table. It opens with an eerie keyboard part that reminded me of something that you might hear in a late 1970's horror movie. Iommi adds some melodic guitar parts before the band joins in to pick up the pace.
Overall it's a cool riff and a catchy vocal. Butler's playing on this track is some of the most memorable from the album so far. He is holding down the bottom but also adding depth to the guitar parts. It is a real showcase for what made Sabbath such a unique metal band.
Things get slow and quiet with a piano coming into the mix and Dio changes things up by singing in a higher register. It's surprising and welcome as six songs in to the album the band is still showing me new things.
The start of the second half of the song has a progressive feel to it and leads to another stellar Iommi solo to finish things off. It reminds me of his solo on "Supernaut" a little bit but it has a handful of little touches that make it unique.
Join me tomorrow for "Walk Away"!
