In the last few years I haven't watched much episodic television, but this season I've been watching quite a few shows ("Gotham", "Justified", "Kroll Show" and "Lilyhammer"). TV is really a writer's medium and I think I've responded to all of these shows because of the strong characters that each show is able to take time developing.
And that brings me to my new favorite show "Jane the Virgin" and the lead character of Jane Gloriana Villanueva played by recent Golden Globe winner Gina Rodriguez. Jane's situation and how she handles all of the drama that it has created is really the highlight of the show for me. It's also really funny. And what's the "situation" you may ask? I'll let the CW's press release for the show explain things:
"Jane Villanueva is a driven young woman studying to become a teacher, nursing a dream to be a writer, and supporting herself with a job at a hot new Miami hotel. Though she’s been “saving herself” until she and her fiancĂ© are married, Jane’s meticulous life plans are turned upside down when her doctor accidentally artificially inseminates her with a specimen meant for someone else. Suddenly, Jane’s life becomes as dramatic and complicated as the telenovelas she has always loved."
Yes it's a crazy concept but it works. The cast of characters and telenovela aspect of the show make "Jane the Virgin" an engaging and entertaining watch. Each episode is also really good at recapping what's happened so far so even if you haven't watched all of the episodes you should be able to jump on-board when the show returns to finish it's first season on March 9th.
