Like Heaven and Hell before it, the first side of Mob Rules ends with the title track. It's not as epic as "Heaven and Hell" but that doesn't prevent it from being a great track.
A nice, aggressive riff starts things off and the band joins in hitting an uptempo pace. Dio's vocals are as nasty as ever. The confidence on display in every vocal performance so far has been inspiring. Dio really knew how to connect with the material, and it's easy to see why he was such a successful artist.
The pre-chorus and chorus are the real highlights of the song as Iommi introduces unique chords that create great atmosphere. The rhythm section can't be ignored as well. The playing is full of energy and forward momentum.
Iommi's lead work is of interesting note as it seems to have more of a modern feel. It is a well executed solo but it left me feeling like something was missing. The outro-solo mixes things up even more. It reminded me of something I'd expect to hear on a Steppenwolf track. Iommi is an excellent player so if nothing else it is interesting to see him stretch himself and try new things.
Stop by tomorrow for "Country Girl"!
