"Country Girl" starts with a heavy, marching riff. It's classic Black Sabbath and it seems that Dio decided to follow the riff like Ozzy would as opposed to finding the melody somewhere around it. From Dio's performance it's the first song that I could actually see Ozzy singing.
It's hard to make people forget original drummer Bill Ward, but I think Vinny Appice is doing a decent job establishing his own identity on drums. The intro is slow and plodding with nice use of what sounds like a splash cymbal. Butler works around the riff in his normal fashion, showcasing the style that launched a thousand metal bass players.
The song feels like a bridge between old and new Black Sabbath as it gets quieter with an expressive Dio vocal in the middle before the excellent guitar break. Iommi solos with a thick fuzzy tone. It's a quick break but every note is perfect.
Tomorrow I'll cover "Slipping Away"!
