Exploring the Rules of Hell - Falling Off the Edge of the World

A quiet, moody intro gets things started with what sounds like a violin. Iommi's clean guitar with a flange-like tone plays along. There are also some synth sounds that ultimately take center stage as the song moves to the next section.

After the transition Iommi goes into a monster riff and the band locks in creating one of the most powerful sections from the Dio era. A fast paced section follows and it culminates in what could be the best Dio vocal that I've heard so far. It is expressive, full of emotion and displays an incredible amount of vocal power.

The band is in tremendous form here and I'm kind of bummed that there is only one more song before Mob Rules ends. They'd record a live album after it and then Dio and Appice would leave for Dio's solo career. Dio would not record with Black Sabbath again until 1992's Dehumanizer. I can only wonder what wonderful music Black Sabbath could have made if Dio had stayed on-board.

Tomorrow "Over and Over"!
