"The Sign of the Southern Cross" is another Black Sabbath epic. It's big and atmospheric and worthy of being included on any list of great Black Sabbath songs.
It song starts with quiet acoustic guitars and some nice melodic lines. Dio joins in signing in a higher register. We've heard it before but here it has a different quality, and it's s a great showcase for how much range Dio possessed.
Things get heavy and it is a nice, rhythmic turn. The whole track sounds great, with each instrument given its own sonic space to breathe. The guitars are punchy, the bass is thick and gritty and the drums are natural and expressive with a kick drum that just sounds massive! There are also some keyboard driven sounds that add additional depth.
The track goes in some great, atmospheric directions with the band creating a sound scape that inspires the imagination to run wild "On a small world west of wonder." It's a great sonic journey and one that I look forward to experiencing again.
Tomorrow I cover "E5150"!
