Exploring the Rules of Hell - Lady Evil
"Lady Evil" is another brand new track for me. It took a few listens for me to really get into it, but after that I was happy to be taken on a sonic journey to "Witch's Valley".
The rhythm section starts things off with Ward and Butler playing a pulsing, hard rock riff Iommi joins in and the bands falls into a nice groove. A quick wah-wah tinged lead line follows and then Dio gets to work setting the scene.
I always knew that Dio was a good singer, but it took listening to these Sabbath songs for me to really appreciate how talented he really was. My favorite aspect of Dio's singing so far has been how he locks into the "feel" of the song. Not just a great metal singer, Dio can get down and dirty on a hard rocker like this and completely grab my attention.
This is the barest song so far from a production standpoint. No keyboards or special sounds are on display, just drums, bass and a few layers of guitar. And with its loose hard rock feel that's the perfect production choice. It's not as memorable as the two previous tracks but it has its moments, most notably Iommi's very expressive solo.
I'm really enjoying this musical journey. Join me tomorrow for "Heaven and Hell"!
