"Black Sabbath" is an iconic track for the band of the same name. The
opening track from the 1970 self-titled release sowed some of the seeds
that would grow into heavy metal. It's an important track from an
important band and it would be unthinkable for the band to perform live
and not have it be part of the set list.
With half of the songs on Live Evil devoted to the Ozzy era of
the band it's inclusion was a no-brainer. Tony Iommi starts things off
with a pre-song bit of "noodling" right in line with other live
performances of the song.
When Dio enters (like "N.I.B." earlier on the album) he brings his own
unique perspective to the song. He alters the rhythm a bit and gets into
character much like he did on "N.I.B.". It's a confident performance
and shows a singer who refuses to be hidden by the large shadow the
older incarnation of the band would cast.
The rest of the band does a fine job with the song as well. Tony Iommi's
solo during the outro is a standout. It takes cues from the album
version and expands on them, offering something fresh while still
sounding classic. So far I've enjoyed the new lineup's take on these old
songs.
Up next "War Pigs"!
