The Captains

William Shatner's The Captains tracks down the 6 actors who have played the lead role of Star Trek "Captain" on TV and film and through a series of interviews gets to the bottom of why they chose the role and how it impacted their life and career. As a concept it sounds wonderful. In its execution it's phenomenal.

William Shatner appears first. He acts as narrator and as we find the other captains he becomes interviewer as well. The other captains are introduced in the order that they appeared in the Trek universe and we then jump back and forth as Shatner engages each. Building the piece around Shatner and framing it from his perspective is a really great idea. As captain on the original classic Star Trek Shatner is likely well aware of the challenges that the future captains faced. In turn having Shatner as the interviewer likely made his subject feel more at ease.

For those unsure the other captains are: Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew, Scott Bakula and Chris Pine. All of them seem game and ready to discuss whatever topics Shatner may bring up. The most time is spent with Patrick Stewart with Avery Brooks and Scot Bakula coming in second and receiving what seems like equal screen time. Out of all of the captains here Chris Pine is really the least seen. Maybe it's the fact that he is a relative newcomer or just didn't have much to say. Either way it is nice to see him included even if it is just for a few brief minutes.

In addition to the core participants other actors from the Star Trek universe pop up at various times to offer their comments on a particular captain or the overall experience of being a part of Trek history. We're also treated to backstage footage of Shatner at various Star Trek conventions and the occasional fan perspective.

New fans, casual fans, hardcore Trekkers and Trekkies and those who are interested in the art of acting should find The Captains to be an enjoyable experience. There are many highlights to be found with the best moments involving Patrick Stewart candidly discussing his biggest regrets and Shatner and Brooks improving a jazz tune at the piano.

The Captains is now available on DVD and Netflix streaming.
