Network television is dead.
It's ok, you don't have to mourn it. It's been dead for awhile now, long before "Friends" or "Frasier" were ever considered "classics" and the world is probably a better place because of it. It had to die actually, all good things do. Oh yeah, and even though I said that network TV was dead I forgot to mention that it was murdered.
Cable TV is the culprit. The networks just couldn't compete with the endless amounts of programming that cable had to offer, some uninterrupted, some uncensored. Competition killed the networks and with it creativity died, replaced by unimaginative reality programs that hook viewers with nothing more than suspense and unsatisfying payoffs.
The one cable channel that has really broken out and offered some great original programming is Comedy Central. "South Park" and "Chappelle's Show" are both incredibly original and seemingly unmatched in the laughs department. "RENO 911!" which started its 2nd season on June 9th is a worthy addition to CC's line-up.
Blending the best aspects of reality TV and a sharp form of satire, "RENO 911!" has established itself as one of the most enjoyable and consistent shows on TV. The cast which includes alumni from "The State" and "Viva Variety" are all extremely funny and should be counted as among the best talent that are currently working in improv situations.
The 1st season is available on a reasonably priced two disk DVD set, and the second season can be caught on Comedy Central Wednesday night's at 10:30.

I swear to Christ, I was just going to do a post on how great Comedy Central is, including singling out Chappelle, South Park, and Reno as standouts. Great minds think alike, I guess.
